ABOUT ARCSCHOLARS
Marcy Houses Site Walk, Spring 2023
ARCscholars was born out of an idea to engage with young adults living in New York City Housing Authority developments to explore their potential to become architects. Many young adults know that they want to engage with the built environment but don’t have the language or access to the formal education needed to pursue that goal.
That’s where ARCscholars comes in.
This is a program that introduces architecture and design to NYCHA young adults through the study of a specific NYCHA development. These students are joined and mentored by City Tech Architecture students, and together the cohort embarks on an architectural journey. Together the scholars investigate the existing conditions at the selected campus and collaboratively determine design improvements. The scholars meet with leaders within the NYCHA community, are mentored by architectural and urban design professionals, and workshop together. The students creatively integrate the words of the leadership, their peers, and their personal experiences into the designs.
The goal is to continue to grow ARCscholars and to find ways to launch our students into professional architectural education and the career opportunities that it affords.
